However, plants in pots that are bought at discount houses are just as they sound—discount. If you are serious about this project, you might decide to reward yourself with the purchase of a nice little clay tray or pot that will encourage you to take pride in your bonsai plant. Or you can drop by a nursery or online store and spring for a more expensive, hardier plant that might survive the learning curve! Look for plants with unbroken branches.
You’ll be surprised how much information you’ll be able to use in other gardening applications. To raise a bonsai plant is a specialty—to learn about different types of gardening situations and environments is a hobby that many people enjoy. There are even social groups comprised of gardeners who have a bonsai plant and want to share their knowledge with other green thumbs, or for new potters who are full of questions and want to consult the masters in the field.
Another fun way to learn about this type of gardening is to search for images on the internet. Google has a wonderful selection of roughly 4,000 bonsai plant images. Bonsai is actually a form of fine art that was started with the Chinese and then was adapted and expanded by the Japanese. Some of the original bonsai plans were actually miniature trees—natural mutants. The term “bonsai” in the United States is a bit less restrictive than the art in Japan, because not all plants can equally be used. To be a true bonsai plant, all aspects of the plant should be in proportion to a regular tree.
